the real colorado

clarissa and i spent the weekend at a horse ranch in the san luis valley.  the experience rejuvenated our bodies and recharged our souls.  we rode horseback through the cristo de sangre wilderness. through a grove of aspens, political conversations and philosophical reflections ensued.  back at the ranch, we feasted on grilled salmon steaks and fresh corn and potatoes, roasted on an open fire.  the owner was a true renaissance man: former chairman of the board of outward bound, a founding member of the american board of family practice, and a mentor and teacher to generations of surgeons.

labors of spring

summer arrived to denver.  flowers bloom.  the results of spring's labors.  on the L&D this week,  i managed two mothers who had large babies.  shoulder dystocia complicated both births.  nothing gets the heart going at three in the morning.  this reminds us that birth is a miracle.  life is precious.
